Educational Programme

We are pleased to announce that the following groups/annual conferences will also now be participating in AMSU 2010; RAWS (Research, Advice and Welfare Staff), SUM (Student Union Marketing), EMSU (Entertainments Managers in Students' Unions) and the HR Group. The participation of these specialist groups will help to ensure this will be the liveliest and best attended AMSU event in many years. In addition, we will be extending a warm welcome to a delegation from ACUI Region 1 in the States as part of the 2010 cultural exchange programme.

The main conference sessions will be streamed into the following headings:

  1. Sector Knowledge
  2. Leadership and Management
  3. Stakeholder Engagement
  4. Integrated Marketing Communications
  5. Democracy and Governance
  6. Commercial and Finance

and there will also be additional, specific sessions for the groups mentioned above which are open to all delegates.

SUEI (Students' Union Evaluation Initiative) are also going to approve sessions which are relevant to the standard so unions who are in the process can use the conference in their work towards SUEI accreditation. Look out for these sessions which will be indicated with a SUEI tick on the conference programme.

This year there is space in the programme for networking with the AMSU regions and the AMSU specialist groups as well as an opportunity to meet with the Trustees to discuss the current collaborations negotiations and the future of AMSU. We understand that one of the frustrations is that just when the debate has got somewhere interesting in a session time is up. We have included the ability for groups in sessions which have these good conversations going to “book” the room later in the day to continue that conversation.

We are delighted to confirm that Professor Steve Smith (current President of Universities UK and VC at Exeter) will be joining us at AMSU 2010 as the keynote speaker at the closing session. Steve is in London later that day for the 1994 Group Annual Conference but has very kindly worked his diary to ensure he can be with us in the morning. Great news for our conference as he is a really entertaining and noteworthy speaker.

We have also confirmed a superb range of keynote speakers from the worlds of business, higher education and the charity/voluntary sector namely; Baroness Diana Warwick, Michael Johnson, Matt Hyde and Debra Allcock-Tyler

Among the other many sessions on offer you will find; Paul Porral, Head of Brand Creative at John Lewis, Robert Behrens, Chief Executive of the Office of the Independent Adjudicator for Higher Education (OIA),  Hilary Crook of Hatch Legal, who provides training for UNIPOL, Paul McKeown, IBM , Uday Thakkar, Red Ochre, Redbrick Media Group, the legendary Brothers Berg (Nick/Jon), the Jim Dickinson All Star Revue and many more.  Check out the conference session plan below for the latest information!

We will also have a healthy panel debate on the future of HE featuring a mix of Vice Chancellors and Higher Education agencies.

For your advance information, session titles are being included on the conference session plan below as we schedule and confirm them and the website will be constantly updated with these additional sessions so please keep an eye out for the latest developments. There are already more session slots than previous conferences and this will help to enhance your conference experience. To get a flavour of conference, the sessions being worked on at the moment are listed below:

Finally after checking the fixtures and working out the time differences we can confirm that thankfully the England World Cup fixture against Slovenia will not interfere with the AGM on Wednesday so for those people who believe a minor sporting issue is much more important than the future of AMSU then this will come as a relief!
